ELA- Students have been continuing reading workshop in the Daily 5. They are working on completing their genre requirements and working towards their 30 book goal for the year. They should continue reading at home for 30 minutes every night. They are also continuing writing and publishing vocabulary in their writing notebooks. Writing workshop will continue in May.
Math- Students are continuing to work on fractions. They have finished the addition and subtraction of fractions unit (although we will continue to review this in class). They will now be combining a review of decimal multiplication and division with fraction multiplication and division, before we move into our data and measurement unit in May. Students should be getting on Khan Academy for at least one hour each week and they should be on Xtramath three times each week if they have not passed their math facts. They are expected to complete all of their math facts by the end of the year.
Social Studies- We have been studying the "Road to the Revolution" through a variety of simulations in the classroom (ask them about the Boston Tea Party)! We are also following along watching several "Liberty Kids" episodes which are free on Youtube for students to watch at home if they would like. Next week the War will begin! Ask students about what type of a person they are in the 1700s- they even have a colonial name! Be sure to look for their Physical Representation of their person which will be hanging on our classroom door for conferences.
Science- The science experiment was an overall success! The students are excited to share with you at conferences.
Conferences- This spring, conferences will be held April 23. These conferences are entirely student-led. Your child will be sharing what they have been working on and learning in the fifth grade. If you would like to meet with me regarding their grade or any concerns, please call the office to schedule a meeting, as this Thursday I will not be meeting with individual parents.
